We had a train to catch in the afternoon, and had to check out of our apartment, so had to carry all our luggage all day. Lucky it is that we are travelling light.

We started by catching the U-bahn back to Stephansplatz and walking down to the historic Hofburg area in the old inner city.

In Michaelerplatz outside the imperial palace complex, construction excavations back in 1990 unearthed some Roman structures. These have been preserved in an area in the middle of the town square, and show ancient wall constructions across different periods of time, back to the Romans 2000 years ago.
