Coconut Beach on the SW side of Dunk Island is a jewel of tropical Queensland. Dunk Island is a lush tropical jungle, with heavy vegetation thriving in the red volcanic soil with plenty of rainfall. The steep slope of the island above Coconut Beach drains that rainfall through springs that emerge in the sand of the intertidal zone. The rainforest overhangs granite boulders that stand like turtles in the ocean at high tide.
We came to Coconut Beach by taking the long track south from the Kootaloo lookout, taking more than three hours. However, it is only about 30 minutes walking from the anchorage along the beach.
