While travelling Indonesia, we were on the lookout for local foods. At Bula, on the island of Seram, we made friends with some of the local boys, who later returned with bags of fruit for us. One of the local fruits in season was the Rose Water Apple, syzygium aqueum, which is beautiful little mauve bell shape that is crisp and watery to eat, with texture like a watermelon. We have been adding them to our muesli each morning. They seem to keep well in the fridge, so we will be looking for more when we visit markets again next.

It looks like there are two different fruits that look similar, the Java Apple and the Rose Water Apple. Java Apples are slightly taller. I think Jambu are the Java Apple. How do they taste? These Rose Water Apples are crunchy but bland; full of water, a bit like watermelon.
