After passing through the Kabui Passage, we anchored for the night. This morning, using our satellite images to guide us to this find, we explored a labyrinth of karst rock islands surrounded by pools of deep water that fill the entire interior of this western end of the island of Pulau Gam in Raja Ampat.
It would have been impossible to stumble into the tiny creek that opens into this huge area of about 10 square kilometers without the aid of satellite. From the coast line, the creek was not even visible. The anchorage was difficult, with depths of 40m right up to the fringing coral. The satellite showed us that there is a shallow bank at the mouth of the creek that appeared to be scoured by the tidal currents, and it proved to be. We found a patch of sand in 4m depth right in the mouth, and manoeuvred SeeBeeZee so that the anchor dropped right into this patch of sand.
The anchorage was a bit precarious, so we quickly headed off in the dinghy for a short trip around this most amazing maze of land and water. I have included screenshots from the satellite navigation to give some impression of the extent of this area.
