A well known attraction on Wayag are the tame reef sharks at the ranger station.
This morning, we travelled around to the beach with a couple of other yachty couples in our dinghies, and spent the next four hours snorkelling and wading with the sharks. At first, we had the place to ourselves, and were able to appreciate the natural environment of fish and sharks. Initially, the sharks approached and were very tame and inquisitive, but then seemed to tire of us, as we had nothing for them.
Later, a couple of tourist boats visited, and brought with them cubed fish to feed them. This turned into a frenzy, with the sharks and fish swirling and cartwheeling through the crowd of people. Below are a number of photos, and a short video of the experience.
We appreciated both experiences; our quiet time before, and the frenzy after the tourist boats arrived.
