After months away around the islands of northern Raja Ampat, the local markets at Waisai provided an excellent opportunity to refill the cupboards and fridge on board SeeBeeZee.
The markets back onto the little creek that runs out in the eastern end of Waisai town, and this a major point for provisioning for all the homestay accommodation facilities, with longboats coming from 50 miles away to collect food and tourists to take back to their islands. We found the market to be the friendliest of all the Indonesian markets we have visited so far, but a little more expensive.
It appears that the produce being sold at the markets has come from Sorong by ferry, with very little local agriculture. Waisai seems to focus its efforts towards tourism. Across the river, there was also a service station, where we were able to refill our fuel drums that are getting an unusual amount of use due to the calm weather conditions.
Again, we were shocked by the volume of plastic being disposed of into the creek. We had to twice stop our dinghy to clear the motor and propeller of plastic on our trips to the creek while we here.
