The use of the scooter while we were at Tampa Garam gave us the freedom to explore other places that are a bit out of the way. One such place was Kasauri Beach, to the north of Tampa Garam.
Kasauri is on the western tip of Western Papua. Coming out of the security gate at Tampa Garam, we turned left, away from Sorong, and headed off along the rural road to explore the end of the island. Shortly we came to Kasauri Beach, which is a favourite spot for the Sorong locals to cool off in the ocean. We found the beach, facing north into the Selat Dampier (Dampier Strait) and the Pacific Ocean to be protected from the big ocean swells by an offshore reef, so boats were able to safely moor along the beach front. On the beach a swing was arranged from an overhanging palm, and Birgit had a turn, but some little kids had to show her how it is meant to be done. Running down to the beach are a number of creeks. We took photos of one particular creek that is similar to all in that it has become an open sewer, carrying household waste and plastic to the beachfront.
Along the road out to the beach, we found little stall where residents sold their fresh fruit and vegetables to passing traffic, and tried some more of the tropical fruits we are so much enjoying in Indonesia.
