After breaking the antenna on our last handheld VHF radio by carrying it in a backpack, we wanted to protect our new radio from the same death. The old radio was 10 years old, and I think that maybe the flexi rubber antenna may have been a little more brittle than when it was new, but we had snapped it a number of times, repairing it with heatshrink. This time, we have made this sleeve for the antenna, and anchored it into a groove in the back of the handset where a belt clip could be located. Many prototypes were required, as the groove required a complex polyhedron shape, and the tapered antenna had to be located just right.

It’s been tested in the backpack now, and the support keeps the antenna straight. Hopefully this will save us an expensive repair. The manufacturers of the old Simrad handset no longer supply a replacement antenna. I’ll have to try buying a generic one and seeing if it can be made to fit.
