One of the highlights of Darwin is the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. It is located on the shore at the southern end of the Fannie Bay beach, so was easily accessible for us, being a short walk from where we beached our dinghy at the Darwin Sailing Club.
The MAGNT offers free admission, so we visited a couple of times, not staying until getting tired of standing and reading. The big attractions of the facility are the Cyclone Tracy exhibit, the collection of ships from SE Asia and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. In the Cyclone Tracy exhibit, there is a recreation of many of the aspects of life in Darwin in the 70’s and of course some recreations of the event itself, such as the local met office and a sound booth where recordings from the fateful night in 1974 are played in frightening;y realistic example of the event. As well as displaying artefacts and photographs of the NT past, the museum also includes some interesting exhibits of insects and animals that are unique to this environment.
