At the top of the gorge on the Berkeley River in east Kimberley, there is a waterfall that has eaten into the side of the gorge so deeply that it has created a natural amphitheatre, where sounds echo off the cliff faces. We anchored a little upstream from the falls where the bottom had good sand and mud for the anchor to hold, and at low tide, there was a little beach exposed that allowed us access to the shore. From the beach, it was possible to scamper up the rocks of a small gully to the plateau near the top of the falls.
From there, we explored the creek that feeds the amphitheatre, walking upstream over the rocks to find some rock pools for a swim. It is late in the dry season, and the creeks are dry, with only a trickle coming from the springs at the top of the plateau.
The deep rock pools remain full of water, but they are reported to contain crocodiles, so we cooled off in the little ponds where the entire pool can be inspected for danger. Friendly fish come to look at us as we bathed in their creek.
