We’re back to the top end of Napier Broome Bay, and in a little sandy bay at the eastern end of the island. WIth NW breeze forecast for this afternoon, this bay is a comfortable shelter.
Across the isthmus to the northern shore of the island is the remains of a rough camp that was built in 2010. Thane Mortensen is said to have lived here for a while with his seven Jack Russell dogs. It seems that he had a small catamaran that he used for getting in supplies and water, but ran in to trouble in the boat off Cape Londonderry, and had to be rescued by helicopter. After loosing the boat this way, he never returned.
We walked around the rock platforms where he lived, finding a well made fish smoker, but his rock shelter has been destroyed by the elements and now all that remains are rusty old machines and tools and building materials that are really nothing more than rubbish.
