We caught the early Eurostar train from Amsterdam Centraal to Paris Gare du Nord, arriving before lunch time. While these trains are decades old, they are still fast. Our navigation app on the mobile phone had us sitting on 299km/hr for extended periods. This thing goes so fast that a plane would be flying at this speed. The train is electric powered, connected to the overhead wires by pantograph. A complication in the engineering of these trains is the different electricity voltage supplied in each country, and even no consistency with AC or DC.
This short video gives a glimpse of the experience of high speed rail. The ride is so smooth the even writing is not difficult.
