We woke at Garry’s Anchorage in the Great Sandy Straits to find the air over the massive sand island to our east was cold enough to condense up a heavy fog.
We were heading north with the ambition of getting through the shallowest part of the straits and anchored in a position ready to make a run to the north out of Hervey Bay.
By working the fast flowing tides we made good progress in light conditions and anchored off the sandhills at McKenzies Jetty, just south of the Kingfisher Resort on K’gari, and across from River Heads where the Mary River enters the straits.
The jetty here is more than 100 years old, and is a relic of when this island was once logged. Now it is a sun bleached ruin that attracts some of the wildlife. With only light winds on the forecast, we stayed on for a second night here, and were ready to leave before sunrise to make the most of the tides.
