Out trip to the Gold Coast included an overnight stop at Byron Bay. When we travel north at this time of year, the days are shorter, and the distance is actually longer, as we are pushing into the East Australian Current that brings warm tropical water down to NSW. This means that we can not reach the entrance at the Gold Coast seaway from down around the Clarence in one day, so anchoring overnight offshore from Byron Bay gives us good rest.
Being anchored close to shore also gave opportunity for a local friend to make the long paddle out from the beach in order to come and have breakfast with us. This time we kept well inshore along the Tweed coast, and cut inside Cook Island and passed just outside the Tweed River mouth, making the most of the cold offshore breeze and avoiding the contrary currents. Once over the bar and anchored in the Marine Stadium in the Broadwater, commonly known as Bums Bay, we were able to put our bikes ashore and go exploring the sights of the Gold Coast.
