From the island at the mouth, looking back to the yachts at anchor in the creek
Because Island Head Creek lies in the Shoalwater Bay Military area on the Queensland coast, we are not allowed inland from the high tide line due to the risk of unexploded ordinance. As a change to the usual beach walk as our afternoon exercise, today we took the dinghy to the little island just inside Island Head and rock climbed to the top for an excellent view of the creek and coastline.
The rocky island itself was pretty interesting, with fluffy holely metamorphic rocks that had been well weathered, layers of shale and mudstone, and an intrusion of basalt; all together signalling a violent past and an indicator of why the area is so mountainous.
The dinghy ride also gave us a chance to examine the channel out to the north on the inside of the island, a perfect way to leave Island Head when travelling north.
